I am using vmware-server-1.0.1-29996 because
it is free. You stiill have to register and get a serial #.
From what i understand vmware-workstation
is a demo which expires in 30 days.

To do the install i added in /etc/make.conf
VIDEO_CARDS="nv nvidia vmware"
This will install vmware video driver on your
WinXp "guest" when you install the vmware tools
on the guest, while logged in from the host.
I then did the install and used all defaults
on config questions. After install i followed the
instructions from FranzRogar.

Note for Server: You have to run this command after sudo to
gain access to localhost.

Also i did not install WinXp into my Gentoo. I dual
boot my pc with Gentoo on hda and WinXp on hdb.
So after installing and configuring vmware you have to
create a virtual machine. I just pointed it to the two
partitions i have on hdb "hdb1 and hdb2". In order
for me to do that i have ntfs3g/fuse installed and
setup hdb1 and hdb2 in my /etc/fstab.

WinXp does start on viewport 3 in full screen with a
tiny border line which allows me to grab the cube
and spin it. After login i had to adjust video resolution.
It seems to work best when resolution from Linux and
WinXp are the same. Everything seems to work fine
except when i tried running NFS Most Wanted. This may
be due to lack of memory. Out of 1g of mem, it was all
used up and for the first time my Linux was using the
swap file...LOL
